Web-Don, Inc. proudly celebrates over 40 years in the building materials industry and counting. Among its greatest achievements have been gaining recognition as the 1997 Wilsonart Distributor Of The Year, maintaining fantastic employee retention rates, and turning a small business into a mega-success.
Web-Don, Inc. started in Charlotte, NC in 1972. Web-Don began its journey as a Wilsonart distributor, although Wilsonart was only one line in a multi-line distribution business. Neighbors Webster Collett and Don Smith first owned and operated C & S Distributors, which was primarily a Florida Tile distributor. Buck McQuay joined the men in ’72 with a small line of credit that he secured from his local bank. At the time McQuay was only 32 years old, and taking on such a business venture was a definite risk. But it proved to be a very fruitful risk!
Collett and Smith were convinced their future prospects lay in the Florida Tile business, but McQuay saw the brighter prospects of the Wilsonart line. By 1973, C & S had closed its doors and Web-Don began its journey as one of the foremost Wilsonart distributors in the US. McQuay and Smith bought out Collett early on, and from that point until 2005, McQuay and Smith ran Web-Don. Buck McQuay bought out Don Smith in 2005, and today he is the sole owner of Web-Don, Inc.
Within a few years, Web-Don, Inc. had added other manufacturers and even more locations in Winston and Raleigh. The company’s history still was not without its rough spots, though. In the early 70s, tough economic times, forced employees of Web-Don, Inc. to cut their work week back to four days. Throughout this time, the company was continually adamant about doing everything possible to avoid layoffs. Luckily, with outstanding leadership and quality products, this did not last long.
That “protect your workforce” philosophy has paid off. Out of its 120 employees, 30% of the current Web-Don, Inc., staff has been with the company with a company-wide average of over ten years’ service. Low turnover is only one of Web-Don, Inc.’s boasting points; they also stress promotion from within and a comfortable working environment for all of their employees.
With such outstanding leadership from within, it is easy to see why expansion has further been on the rise. There are now Web-Don, Inc., locations in six cities in three states. A new 60,000+ sq. ft. headquarters in Charlotte was built to accommodate growing business with the company’s 4,000 plus customer base. In 2010, the new cabinet division of Web-Don – Carolina Heartwood Cabinetry – opened its doors in a 25,000 SF facility just up the street from Web-Don’s corporate headquarters. Shortly after that, Web-Don’s panel division, Carolina Panels, opened between the cabinet division and the corporate headquarters.Web-Don, Inc., attributes its growth to outdoing competitors in two major areas: providing “second-to-none” service and maintaining aggressive levels of inventory.
The company has high hopes for the future, including expansion throughout the mid-Atlantic where deliveries can be made quickly and productively with minimum lead times. Most of all, though, Web-Don, Inc. strives to maintain the family values and the small business style of loyalty and camaraderie that helped it survive the tumultuous 70’s, the crazy 80’s, the wild 90’s; and that has enabled us to achieve a true pinnacle of success and staying power as we have moved well into the new century.
